From disappointment to destiny

When I was younger, I wanted to be a secretary. It was my dream job!

At 18 years old, I thought I was close to realizing this dream when a position at a temp agency opened up for an office assistant. The duties included filing, typing and keeping things flowing smoothly in the office. I applied and was called for an interview that included a typing test. I was expected to type 50-60 words per minute.

Though I could type well, during the typing test, my nerves got the best of me. I kept pushing the wrong computer keys and seeing a bunch of red squiggly lines all over my document, indicating that I had misspelled words. Though I knew I didn’t perform well enough on the typing test to get the position, it was no less disappointing when I received the official news.

Instead of getting my dream job in an office, I was offered a factory position. I accepted and worked as a shirt-hanger on an assembly line.

While working in the factory, I met a young lady who was hired to work in my department. She was friendly and talkative, and she asked lots of questions about me and my family. That’s how I got a chance to share my faith with her. I learned that she had once been saved but lost her way. I told her that it wasn’t too late to give her heart back to the Lord. Not too long after, she quit working there. I never saw her again and eventually went off to college. But she didn’t leave before I was able to plant a seed of faith in her heart.

Daily Cup family, that encounter helped me realize that my assignment wasn’t just about hanging shirts, it was about changing lives. What I initially viewed as a disappointment was actually a divine assignment.

God’s purpose always prevails in every life circumstance—disappointing or otherwise. Trust Him to bring the best out of the worst situation!
— Dianna Hobbs

In Mark 10:46-52, the Lord’s purpose prevailed in the life of a blind beggar named Bartimaeus. As Jesus and His disciples and a large crowd were about to leave Jericho, likely on their way to Jerusalem for Passover, Bartimaeus cried out, “Jesus, Son of David. Have mercy on me!”

By calling Jesus “Son of David,” Bartimaeus revealed his faith in Christ as the Messiah, because the Jews believed that the Messiah would be a descendant of King David.

Well, Bartimaeus’s faith-filled cries got Jesus’s attention, and the Savior called him over. “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. Then Bartimaeus, whose name means “Son of the Unclean” or “Heir of Uncleanness,” said he wanted to receive his sight. And Jesus told him, “Your faith has healed you.”

In that moment, the unclean one, whose unfortunate circumstances seemed permanent, received a miracle! His life reminds us that God turns disappointments into divine, life-shifting moments of destiny. Isn’t God amazing?

I don’t know what disappointments you have faced in the past or may be dealing with right now, but I do know that God has not forgotten you. Some of your dreams may be unfulfilled, and you may not know where the road you’re traveling is leading. Nevertheless, Jesus, the Son of David, the Messiah and the Anointed One, who gave Bartimaeus His sight, is present with you.

And He wants you to know that He has a good plan. Your setbacks are just setups for God to get glory. The disappointments and detours are temporary shifts on your road to destiny. God will meet all of your needs, and He will produce the best outcomes from the worst circumstances.

Romans 8:18 KJV, which is what I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration, says, “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, remember that temporary suffering is inextricably tied to the the eternal glorification of the Father. Through every phase of your journey, as long as you remain faithful, God will get glory through you and cause all things to work together for your good.

Now, let’s pray.
