God’s vow cannot be broken

I was a young girl at school the first time I heard someone say, “pinky swear.”

I had no idea what that meant, but I got an education the day I noticed two girls interlocking pinkies in the lunchroom. One had borrowed a quarter and assured her friend, the generous lender, that she would return her 25 cents the following day.

“Pinky swear?” asked the girl before handing the borrower the shiny coin. “Yep, pinky swear,” said her friend, joining pinkies.

“That means it’s a promise that can’t be broken,” stressed the lender.

With that, they both went off to get ice cream and seemed pleased with their amateur business negotiation.

The next day, however, the two friends weren’t looking so friendly at lunch time. “You said, pinky swear!” the lender yelled, demanding the return of her loan. But the borrower, who seemed not to care very much about the oath she had eagerly made the day before, refused to make good on her word.

That friendly pinky swear quickly turned into a violent fist fight.

And it was that day when young Dianna had an epiphany. Pinky swearing was meaningless if one of the parties lacked integrity. And it just might result in a fist fight and a trip to the principal’s office.

No pinky swearing for me! I thought.

I’m so glad God isn’t like people. When He swears, He always makes good on His promise—no pinky needed.

God told me that somebody reading needs to be reminded that He is faithful to perform His word because you’re waiting for the Lord to deliver. And He wants you to know, friend, the good things, breakthroughs, and victories He promised you will manifest. Don’t lose hope!

I know how hard it can be to cling to faith when circumstances look bad, when the wait has been long, and when you feel overwhelmed by the attack of the enemy. It can be tough to wrap your head around the promises of God, so you crave confirmation. You desperately want a sign that the same God who swore to do something for you will do it.

But listen, God’s word is true—sign or not— the moment He speaks it. He spoke to me today as I was writing this devotion and said, “My word is immutable,” and that means it is unable to be changed, even over time it doesn’t change. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of our God stands forever (Isaiah 40:8).

There’s a scriptural passage I really love in Hebrews 6:13-14 that says, “When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, ‘I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.’”

That word “swear” in this passage is Greek and means to take an oath, to promise, to affirm, to call a person or thing as a witness.

In other words, God said, I don’t need any witnesses other than Myself. My promise, My oath, and what I affirm is as good as done. When I make a vow, God says, I will never renege on My word.

‘What did I promise you?’ says the Lord. ‘I am a faithful God who cannot lie. So, why would you ever worry? Trust Me.’
— Dianna Hobbs

That passage in Hebrews I just mentioned is referencing a promise God made to Abraham back in Genesis 22 when Abraham obediently prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac as God instructed. But God let a ram get caught in the thicket to be used as the sacrifice instead of Isaac. This is an Old Testament example of substitutionary atonement. Just as the ram acted as the substitute for Isaac and died in his place, Jesus, the Lamb of God, was our substitute and died in our place to redeem us from sin.

Because Abraham heeded the voice of God and was willing to give up his own son before the ram showed up, God told Abraham, “I swear I’m going to bless you.”  And God made good on His promise to make Abraham, the father of faith, a great nation, and through his seed, all the nations of earth would be blessed.

And today, God is sending you the word He sent to Abraham: I swear I’m going to bless you.

I swear I’m going to heal you. I swear I’m going to give you that approval you’ve been praying about. I swear I’m going to increase you. I swear I’m going to save your loved ones. I swear I’m going to regulate your mind and emotions. I swear I’m going to deliver your child. I swear I’m going to give you a double portion of blessings.

He is making a vow unto you this day that there is a harvest waiting for you.

And right now, I’m stirring Hebrews 6:17-19 CEV into your cup of inspiration, which says, “So when God wanted to prove for certain that his promise to his people could not be broken, he made a vow. God cannot tell lies! And so his promises and vows are two things that can never be changed.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, be assured that God’s promise will never be broken. He will do just what He said.

He swears by Himself.

Now, let’s pray.

God, thank You for assuring me that You can always be trusted to keep Your promises. When doubt tries to creep in, please help me hold fast to Your word and declare that whatever You say, You will do, for You can neither lie nor fail. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
