Choose to rejoice every day!

On Wednesday, I was conversing with my 16-year-old son, Kaleb, when he mentioned a Bible verse: “This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).

He then said, “The Bible doesn’t say what kind of day it is—whether it’s a good day or a bad day—just that it’s the day that the Lord has made, and for that reason, we will rejoice and be glad in it.”

“You betta preach!” I said, as I often admonish him excitedly when he says something that makes my spirit leap.

After Kaleb pointed that out, I felt inspired to read the full, beautiful psalm which is filled with praise and gratitude. As I dug into it, something jumped out at me.

I noted that in the verse immediately following the one Kaleb singled out, there is a prayer that says, “Please, Lord, please save us. Please, Lord, please give us success” (v. 25 NLT).

After reading that, I thought to myself, wow! The writer made a conscious choice to rejoice while still having unanswered prayers. He was clearly asking for deliverance and favor that had not yet manifested. Nevertheless, he didn’t let the wait stop his praise!

From that, God planted a thought in my spirit: You must make the choice to rejoice. Even on a bad day. Even while you’re awaiting deliverance. Even before the answer shows up. Even as you’re in the fire of affliction. Even as you’re pleading with God to move on your behalf.

Make the choice to rejoice.

Tell God, in every season, I’ll praise You. In every season, I’ll worship You. In every season, I’ll sow. In every season, I’ll trust You. In every season, I’ll recall Your faithfulness. In every season, I will rejoice!

In Psalm 118, the writer does something else significant by recalling past times when God performed great deeds. This is so important and effective! You see, remembering what God did before gives you strength when you’re weak and reminds you that He’s able to do it again.

Sometimes, the best cure for misery is memory. If you can remember how God healed you before, restored you, blessed you, rescued you, protected you, and worked a miracle for you, you will find a reason this day—whatever kind of day it is—to rejoice and be glad in it.

To help you make the choice to rejoice, I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration the powerful words written by the psalmist David in Psalm 34:1 KJV: “I will bless the Lord at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, remember the faithfulness of our great God. Then you will be able to bless His name when the rain pours and when the sun shines. Whatever the weather, whatever the season, you will find a reason to rejoice and be glad.

Thanks, Kaleb, for the inspiration, son.

Now, let’s pray.

God, my soul rejoices in Your goodness. Though every day is not good, You are good every day. Therefore, I will exalt You for Your faithfulness as I eagerly await and expect You to show up for me once again. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

By the way, here’s a song that’s really been blessing me lately from Kaleb’s favorite singer, Jonathan McReynolds, and I recommend listening to it.
