Have you ever bought into a false narrative about yourself that proved to be harmful, limiting, discouraging, and toxic? The truth is, at some point, we all have. But God wants you to release every lie and embrace the truth—what He says about you in His word—and it will push you right into your ultimate destiny.

Somebody here has been bound, tormented, and hurting long enough. This is your day of freedom and your official notice that God is about to catapult you to new heights if you would only believe!

It was some time in the late 80s or early 90s, when I was home from school for two weeks with Chicken Pox. Covered in itchy, red water blisters, my nightmarish, achy, feverish misery was lessened by the discovery of soap operas.

My mother, Annie, loved to watch daytime soaps; she called them her “stories.” One of her favorite soapy dramas was “Santa Barbara” which featured an interracial couple, Eden and Cruz Castillo.

Mama loved her some Eden and Cruz, hear me? Me too.

I was sort of drawn to their intense but ill-fated love that was constantly tested by challenges, obstacles, and struggles. But, somehow, someway, Eden and Cruz would always find their way back to each other. The sappy, melodramatic, over-the-top entertainment sucked me right on in, and I was suddenly hooked on stories like my mama.

Though I enjoyed watching “All My Children” and “Days of Our Lives,” nothing could compare to “Santa Barbara.” Their romance made my young heart flutter, and I rooted for Eden and Cruz’s happily ever after.

Now, after returning to school, I was no longer able to indulge my new soap opera addiction. I missed my TV friends terribly and often wondered how Eden and Cruz were faring. No one could tell me they were merely actors and not really in love. I was fully invested and engrossed in their fantasy world. Eden and Cruz forever held a special place in my heart.

Even after the traumatic brain injury I sustained in 2019 wiped away a lot of my memories, Eden and Cruz survived. Child, my brain said, nah, this is real love. We need to keep this mental file. Ha! Nowadays, it makes me chuckle to think about how caught up I was in their story.

Anyway, enough about Eden and Cruz. However, I do find it fascinating how the human mind and emotions work. We can fully buy into a story and forget it isn’t true—even a story we create in our own minds.

For a moment, I want you to think about stories, the ones you tell yourself. Here’s one: I am not good enough. That’s a false narrative we create and believe. How about, I’ll never achieve my full potential?

Here are more stories: I’m defined by mistakes; I’m limited by my resources; I’m doomed to fail; I don’t matter; I am believing God in vain; Good things never happen for me; I always get the short end of the stick.

False stories.

In our walk with Jesus, fictional stories feel factual when we are led by our emotions rather than our faith. But today, God wants to replace the false narratives with truth; that’s why He sent me to you. The truth is that you are victorious. God has a greater plan for you. You will accomplish everything you have been purposed to do on earth. Favor is yours. What you’re believing God for will happen according to His will—even if you have experienced failure before.

In John 5, the impotent man at the Pool of Bethesda was all too familiar with failure. For 38 years, he had been afflicted with a debilitating infirmity that seemed like it would never end. Therefore, when Jesus showed up and asked this man if he wanted to be made whole, rather than taking Jesus up on the offer immediately, the longtime sufferer started talking about the soap opera that was his life.

The story he told Jesus just so happened to be the same story the infirmed man had been telling himself for almost four decades: I have no one to help me, so I will never get my healing.

Even though help had arrived, the man was so caught up in his failure-narrative that he failed to recognize opportunity when it knocked. Jesus was there to offer him a way up and out of his sad, desperate state. But first, the man had to let go of that stale storyline to embrace and receive the truth.

And we know that John 14:6 tells us, “Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.” Then, in John 8:32, Jesus said, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” When the truth showed up at the Pool of Bethesda in the person of Jesus Christ, He countered the lie this man had been bound by for years.

What lie? After Jesus asked him if he wanted to be well, he told Jesus, “I can’t, sir” (v. 7). And there it is. The false story. The big lie. I can’t. The truth is, according to Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

So then, instead of validating the man’s story, Jesus uttered a command. He said, “Rise, take up your bed, and walk” (v. 8). And instantly, the truth overcame the lie, and the man got up and was healed at once. He did the very thing he said he couldn’t do. See how that works? The truth, if you receive it, will set you free.

I wonder, what lies have you told yourself that are hindering you from walking in victory, rising up, and taking authority over what the enemy sent to hold you back? We have all told ourselves lies at some point, but this is your day to get free. It’s time to release the false narrative that tells you what you can’t and never will have, be, and do. The truth is that this is your year to arise, take your rightful place, and leave limited thinking behind. Let go of your false stories and embrace the truth.

The truth is Romans 8:37: “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” The truth is Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” The truth is Exodus 15:26: “for I am the LORD that healeth thee.” The truth is Philippians 4:19: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” The truth is 1 Peter 2:9: “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.”

Lift your head and your hand and declare, “I am a King’s kid!” Friend, that’s the truth. You are royalty with a divine inheritance that no one can cancel out or take away. Decide to release and receive.

Release the false narratives that are keeping you bound, discouraged, full of worry, doubt, and fear. And receive the truth of God’s word, so you can get up and walk into your destiny, step into your fruitful season, and leap out of the wilderness and into the Promised Land.

Today, I’m stirring a sweetener into your cup of inspiration which is a prayer Jesus prayed found in John 17:17. He said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, exchange your false narratives for the truth. If you do this, God is going to bless you beyond measure and pull you up from your low place. He’ll open new doors for you, shower you with blessings, and make all things possible to you, simply because you believe His word.

Now, let’s pray.

God, thank You for reminding me of the truth of who I am in You—blessed, favored, and entitled to a divine inheritance that comes from being Your child. I ask that You expose every false narrative, every debilitating lie, and every deception of the enemy that would stop me from fully embracing who You say I am, what You promise I shall have, and what You ordained for me to do. Thank You for opening my eyes to the life-transforming truth which is found only in Your word. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
