God is working in the hidden places

Oh, my friend, God is working on you, for you, and in you behind the scenes. And today, He sent me to talk to you about getting strong in the quiet, unseen places of life—the basement, if you will.

It's like my son Kedar's gym tucked away in the basement of our home where the serious work happens. I go down there to sweat it out, to push through the strength training—dumbbell presses, bench presses, boxing, you name it. But let me tell you, it's nothing compared to Kedar, who's got an 8-pack and muscles that make folks do a double-take when he's out and about. Yet, all that chiseled, toned strength? It's built underground, out of sight, in the basement.

Good things happen underground, friend. But too often, we crave the above-ground results without putting in that underground work. Whether we're talking naturally or spiritually, the most impactful changes in our lives don't always happen where everyone can see. They happen in obscurity, away from the limelight that so many chase after.

The root development process

God is leading me to ask you this question: are you willing to stay in that hidden place long enough for God to develop your roots and get the glory out of your life? Think about it—those unseen roots are critical for a tree, just like the deep spiritual roots we need to stand firm in our faith.

Picture that mighty oak tree. Its roots stretch out three times the size of its canopy, anchoring it firmly for over a millennium. It all begins with an acorn reaching down into the earth for the essential nutrients that foster growth.

Now, let's elevate this talk and get spiritual. Many people have those moments where they yearn for recognition, for visibility, to be that big, imposing oak that grabs folks’ attention and brings God the glory. But they fail to remember that God's best work is done in the unseen, underground places. It's deep down in the soil of life where He's shaping us, fortifying our character, making us sturdy, and preparing us to face whatever comes our way.

Deep-rooted strength

Take Joseph's story, for example (Genesis 37-50). We know all about him. The dreamer with the colorful coat, tossed into a pit, enslaved, and wrongfully imprisoned—talk about an underground experience! But God was with him every step of the way, cultivating his character, faith, and trust.

Joseph's years of hardship were like roots stretching deeper and deeper into that dark, nourishing soil of God's purpose. And in the Lord’s perfect timing, Joseph emerged as Egypt's second-in-command, rescuing nations from famine, even his own family. It's his deep-rooted strength that kept him anchored and prosperous.

Listen friend, if you let God do His work and stay rooted in Him, you too will be anchored and prosperous in the things God has called you to. You’ll embody Psalm 1:3, becoming like a tree by the water, flourishing and succeeding in all you do. Remind yourself of this when you feel buried and out of sight; remember God is busy nurturing your roots with His love, His Word, and His Spirit. If you're feeling overlooked, if you're in a season of hidden growth, be encouraged.

Has the Lord got you hidden? Don’t fret. He’s doing His underground work in you, so He can get above-ground glory through you!

Setting the stage

Remember, each step in the shadows is a step toward the light, and every trial faced in the hidden places is setting the stage for triumph in the open spaces. God sent me to tell you, keep holding on, keep pressing forward, and let the rhythm of His work in you be the heartbeat of your unwavering faith.

To remind you that deep roots lead to a solid foundation that position you to withstand any storm and reap all God has for you, I’m stirring a sweetener in your cup today. It’s found in Luke 6:48 NLT, which says, “It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, remind yourself that you too are well built because your foundation is firm and your roots run deep. Get ready to rise up tall and robust in the purpose that God has designed for you. In retrospect, you will see that all this time, what's been happening underground has been prepping you for the amazing things God was about to reveal above ground.

And trust me, it's going to be good. Real good.

Now, let's pray together.

God, I put my trust in the work You're doing in the quiet, unseen places of my life. I long to be like a tree planted by Your streams of water, unshakable in my roots. I’m grateful for the promise that my season to flourish is coming and that my endeavors will thrive as I stay rooted in You. I receive this word by faith! In Jesus' name, Amen.
