Appreciate life

“Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12 NLT)

Today is my husband Kenya’s 48th birthday. It seems like just yesterday when he was 25 years old, and we were getting married on a cold and snowy January day. I’m thankful to God that he has lived to see another year. He is truly my best friend.

Life is so precious, Daily Cup family.

Yesterday, I was talking to hubby about growing older, and he said it was “a little strange” to be inching so close to 50; but he is, of course, grateful to be alive. Both of Kenya’s parents have gone on to Heaven which has given him a deep appreciation of life. He sees it as a gift that is not promised to any of us.

His view is the correct one, because life is fleeting. Scripture calls it a “vapor” in James 4:14. The writer notes that life “appears for a little time and then vanishes away.” Therefore, we should cherish what little time we have, and try to make the most of each moment.

We should love each other. Be more compassionate. More grateful. More giving. More thoughtful. More light-hearted. More purposeful. More aware of and appreciative of the simple things.

For instance, last evening, I smiled when I walked into the living room and observed Kenya relaxing on the couch, watching a basketball game with our oldest son, Kedar. The two were thoroughly enjoying themselves, while the other three Hobbs children – Kyla, Kaiah, and Kaleb – were off in a different room talking and giggling about something. A feeling of contentment came over me as our little house was filled with vibrant sounds and joy all around.

In that moment, my heart bubbled over with gratefulness. And if it could have spoken, it would have gently whispered, Thank You Lord, for all is well. Everyone is healthy.

We are happy.

It’s the simple things that cause a praise to arise within, because I know how quickly life can shift, causing laughter to become tears and turning joy into sorrow. So I’m deliberate about finding things to be thankful for each day – something I recommend that everyone do.

May you realize the brevity of life, and let that drive you to enjoy the small things, live life purposefully, gain wisdom, remain close to God, and find every reason to be grateful every day.

Now, let’s pray.

God, thank You for my life and for all the good things You have given me – both big and small. Please help me be mindful that life is short and do all I can to walk with you, gain wisdom, appreciate life, and live more purposefully every day. In Jesus’ name, Amen..
