Surely, God will deliver
I love reading the psalms in Scripture. They remind me that despite our human frailties and vulnerabilities, God’s unfailing love, unending grace, constant presence, inexhaustible power, unsearchable wisdom, and infallible word make up for everything we lack.
Today, I was reading Psalm 3. In verses 1-2, King David, who wrote this particular psalm, said, “Lord, how many are my foes! How many rise up against me! Many are saying of me, ‘God will not deliver him.’”
David wrote this while he was on the run from his own son, Absalom, who was seeking to strip away his father’s throne by force and kill David (2 Samuel 15). Absalom was under the impression that he could rise to power by his own strength and had turned many of David’s former allies against him. David and his remaining allies fled Jerusalem to escape Absalom whose military coup had gained tremendous momentum.
It was a rough period for David who seemed to be on the losing end as evidenced by so many people assuming that defeat was inevitable for him. But Absalom and those on his side did not realize that the overzealous prince, who temporarily mounted a successful revolt against David, was up against an opponent far more formidable than he. Absalom thought he was fighting David, when he was really fighting the invincible One, God Almighty. It was God who had placed David upon that very throne Absalom was attempting to usurp. Therefore, Absalom was fighting a losing battle.
“The enemy is fighting you, but God is working for you. It may look intimidating. And doubt says, maybe you won’t be victorious. But there is no if, might, or maybe about it. Surely, this battle is won. Go ahead and rejoice. Victory is already yours! ”
When I was in middle school, I got into a fight with a girl. I didn’t want to fight her. She was bigger than me, and she looked pretty intimidating. When I was walking in the hallway, she accosted me and began hitting me, so I defended myself by fighting back. Let’s just say that one of us limped away from that fight pretty banged up and embarrassed … and that somebody wasn’t me.
It’s a terrible thing to pick a fight and lose. But that’s what happened in Absalom’s case. The story ended tragically for him and triumphantly for David. Absalom’s plans came to ruin, and he was eventually killed in battle (2 Samuel 18). But before Absalom’s demise, Psalm 3 reveals how intense this attack really was and how intimidating it all looked to David.
“Tens of thousands assail me on every side,” said David in verse 6, and then he pleaded with God in verse 7, saying, “Arise, Lord! Deliver me, my God!”
And surely, Daily Cup family, deliverance came.
Maybe you are in the throes of some kind of battle today. It could be a battle with sickness or lack; at home or on the job; in ministry or in business; in your mind or in your emotions. But God is saying to you, surely, deliverance will come, because wherever trouble arises, God arises, too.
The first portion of Psalm 68:1 KJV, which is what I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration, says, “Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered.”
As you drink down the contents in your cup, expect God to arise in your situation. Anticipate that He will make His power known by stepping into your circumstances and turning things around in your favor. Surely, deliverance will come. And surely, your current test will become a testimony of God’s power and faithfulness.
Now, let’s pray.
God, I need Your help, and I believe You will show up for me, because You are my faithful defense, my ever-present help, and my refuge in times of storm. Thank You in advance for my breakthrough. I declare by faith that just as You delivered David, surely, You will deliver me too. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
