Take your position

I had a dream last week that a predatory assailant with murderous intentions was on the loose stalking people. Fear gripped the hearts of all those around me, as they ran for the hills bearing automatic rifles.

“Here, take this weapon,” someone said to me, shoving a long barrel gun into my chest. It felt weighty and awkward, as I had never used a firearm to fight. Seconds later, my eyes widened as the towering, black, ghost-like figure quickly inched toward me. I clumsily grabbed the rifle only to watch it slip through my fingers every time I attempted to shoot. For the life of me, I could not figure out how to aim or fire. I was in big trouble!

“I don’t use this kind of weapon,” I told the person who had originally armed me. Frustrated, I handed it over and said, “The weapon that I have been using all my life is invisible, but it’s effective. I can’t switch weapons in the middle of a battle.”

With a puzzled look, they retorted, “There’s no way you can win this battle without this kind of weapon.”

Despite them being convinced that I needed what everybody else had, I stood my ground. I refused to join the ranks of the terrified soldiers tightly clutching their manmade guns, fleeing, and cowering. I was determined not to become a casualty of war like the deceased and wounded fighters I saw strewn along hillsides having been savagely attacked by this relentless foe.

After laying down the machine gun, I picked up my original weapon—the one that nobody was able to see, not even me. Yet, I knew without a doubt that it was there. I could feel it in my hand. So, confidently, I placed my finger on the unseen trigger, fired, hit the target, and subdued the enemy. Those around me that had been losing this devastating war were flabbergasted. They wanted to know, what was the nature of this weapon I had that was invisible yet powerful enough to defeat a seemingly undefeatable foe?

When I woke up from that vivid dream, I heard the voice of the Lord speak and say, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds” (2 Corinthians 10:4 KJV).

I instantly knew what God was saying. My weapon is spiritual. My armor is supernatural. My ammunition is from above. That’s why I win battles—because I know what weapons to use and what armor to wear. I suit up for battle by putting on the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-17). I let the world keep their carnal weapons, as I trust God to secure the victory for me.

As you trust, God will fight for you. Don’t worry. Don’t be intimidated. This battle is the Lord’s.

David trust the Lord and defeated the giant, Goliath, in 1 Samuel 17. It’s pretty amazing because not only was Goliath enormous, but he was also wearing heavy armor, and his shield-bearer went ahead of him (vv. 4-7). A shield-bearer had the job of protecting his fighting companion during engagement with the enemy.

But David, who trusted wholeheartedly in the God of Israel, didn’t have a shield-bearer, but he did have the shield of faith. And though David refused to wear the earthly king’s armor, He knew that the Heavenly King had already armed him for battle. David’s best weapon was the one no one could see—the invisible and invincible God of Israel!

It’s not surprising that David took down that old smack-talking bully Goliath, who had been tormenting the Israelites for weeks, with a slingshot and a smooth stone. All it took was one shot.

One of the things I love about this historic event is that David made a powerful and prophetic declaration before sinking that stone into Goliath’s forehead. He said, “All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord’s” (v. 47).

Listen, God sent me to tell you that this battle you’re facing is just a setup for Him to demonstrate His power and confirm for you and everyone watching that the battle is not yours, it’s the Lord’s. All you have to do is what 2 Chronicles 20:17 says: “Take your position…Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord.”

What position should you take? A position of faith.

Put your faith in God for whom nothing is too hard. Faith in God who never fails. Faith in God who heals all manner of diseases. Faith in God who supplies every need. Faith in God who bears your burdens. Faith in God who wipes away every tear. Faith in God who opens doors no man can close. Faith in God who vindicates. Faith in God who restores. Faith in God who answers prayer. Faith in God who works miracles. Faith in God who saves. Faith in God who has already given you the victory.

Granted, you may be facing intense opposition. That’s alright. The latter portion of 2 Chronicles 20:6 CEB—which is the sweetener I’m stirring into your cup of inspiration—says this about the Lord: “You are so powerful that no one can oppose you.”

As you drink down the contents of your cup, take a position of faith despite what you face. Be assured that you serve an omnipotent savior who opposes whoever and whatever opposes you and the divine purpose He has placed on your life. Your unstoppable, invisible, all-powerful God told me to tell you that no weapon formed against you will prosper.

The enemy cannot defeat you. When you maintain your position of faith, victory is inevitable.

Now let’s pray.

God, thank You for reminding me that faith wins every battle, overcomes every obstacle, and defeats every foe. In times when I am facing intense trials and opposition, help me to believe You no matter what. And as I exercise my faith, I am confident that You will exercise Your power to do the impossible for me. In advance, I thank You for the victory that is already mine! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
